Depending on your coverage, that protection may apply to you or to others. This is often why people say insurance is a “racket.” You pay out money in order to get nothing in return. Car insurance fraud is a terrible crime that not only affects car insurance companies, but anyone who has insurance through them.  It costs the average household $1,030 a year in higher premiums. The amount of fraud in South Carolina in dollars has doubled in the last year, increasing to $14.5 million. The National Insurance Crime Bureau states that the number of questionable claims between 2008 and 2010 increased by 23%. Nationwide, the number of questionable cases for auto insurance last year was 62,500. The next highest category was homeowners, with only 11,700 claims.
